    We describe a period map for those simply connected Enriques surfaces in characteristic 2 whose canonical double cover is K3. The moduli stack for these surfaces has a Deligne-Mumford quotient that is an open substack of a P1\mathbb P^1-bundle over the period space. We also give some general results relating local and global moduli for algebraic varieties and describe the difference in their dimensions in terms of the failure of the automorphism group scheme to be reduced

    Performance Evaluation of Ad Hoc Routing in a Swarm of Autonomous Aerial Vehicles

    This thesis investigates the performance of three mobile ad hoc routing protocols in the context of a swarm of autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). It is proposed that a wireless network of nodes having an average of 5.1774 log n neighbors, where n is the total number of nodes in the network, has a high probability of having no partitions. By decreasing transmission range while ensuring network connectivity, and implementing multi-hop routing between nodes, spatial multiplexing is exploited whereby multiple pairs of nodes simultaneously transmit on the same channel. The proposal is evaluated using the Greedy Perimeter Stateless Routing (GPSR), Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR), and Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocols in the context of a swarm of UAVs using the OPNET network simulation tool. The first-known implementation of GPSR in OPNET is constructed, and routing performance is observed when routing protocol, number of nodes, transmission range, and traffic workload are varied. Performance is evaluated based on proportion of packets successfully delivered, average packet hop count, and average end-to-end delay of packets received. Results indicate that the routing protocol choice has a significant impact on routing performance. While GPSR successfully delivers 50% more packets than OLSR, and experiences a 53% smaller end-to-end delay than AODV when routing packets in a swarm of UAVs, increasing transmission range and using direct transmission to destination nodes with no routing results in a level of performance not achieved using any of the routing protocols evaluated

    Power system applications of optical systems, primarily using fiber optics, are reviewed. The first section reviews fibers as components of communication systems. The second section deals with fiber sensors for power systems, reviewing the many ways light sources and fibers can be combined to make measurements. Methods of measuring electric field gradient are discussed. Optical data processing is the subject of the third section, which begins by reviewing some widely different examples and concludes by outlining some potential applications in power systems: fault location in transformers, optical switching for light fired thyristors and fault detection based on the inherent symmetry of most power apparatus. The fourth and final section is concerned with using optical fibers to transmit power to electric equipment in a high voltage situation, potentially replacing expensive high voltage low power transformers.     Palladium (II) - Catalyzed C3-Selective Friedel-Crafts Reaction of Indoles with Aziridines

    The [PdCl2(MeCN)2]-catalyzed C3-selective Friedel-Crafts reaction of 2,2-disubstituted and 2-aryl-N-tosylaziridines with indoles is reported. For the 2,2-disubstituted substrates, [PdCl2(MeCN)2] alone, without any ancillary ligands, is an efficient catalyst for the ring-opening reaction. The presence of 1,4-benzoquinone as an additive was found to enhance the ring-opening reaction of the less-reactive 2-arylaziridines. This reaction displayed a broad substrate scope with respect to the indole substrate and is operationally simple. Finally, when 1,3-dimethylindole was employed as a substrate, the de-aromatized pyrroloindoline product was obtained in high yield and good diastereoselectivity

    Far-infrared observations of young clusters embedded in the R Coronae Austrinae and RHO Ophiuchi dark clouds

    Multicolor far infrared maps in two nearby dark clouds, R Coronae Austrinae and rho Ophiuchi, were made in order to investigate the individual contribution of low mass stars to the energetics and dynamics of the surrounding gas and dust. Emission from cool dust associated with five low mass stars in Cr A and four in rho Oph was detected; their far infrared luminosities range from 2 far infrared luminosities L. up to 40 far infrared luminosities. When an estimate of the bolometric luminosity was possible, it was found that typically more than 50% of the star's energy was radiated longward of 20 micrometers. meaningful limits to the far infrared luminosities of an additional eleven association members in Cr A and two in rho Oph were also obtained. The dust optical depth surrounding the star R Cr A appears to be asymmetric and may control the dynamics of the surrounding molecular gas. The implications of the results for the cloud energetics and star formation efficiency in these two clouds are discussed

    Semantics for Intuitionistic Arithmetic Based on Tarski Games with Retractable Moves

    Abstract. We define an effective, sound and complete game semantics for HAinf, Intuitionistic Arithmetic with ω-rule. Our semantics is equivalent to the original semantics proposed by Lorentzen [6], but it is based on the more recent notions of ”backtracking ” ([5], [2]) and of isomorphism between proofs and strategies ([8]). We prove that winning strategies in our game semantics are tree-isomorphic to the set of proofs of some variant of HAinf, and that they are a sound and complete interpretation of HAinf. 1 Why game semantics of Intuitionistic Arithmetic?
